Blue Mountains City Council Must Reform
The council could still face suspension if it does not fully comply, Ms Upton warned.
“We are not taking any chances with public safety and for that reason I have formally issued a PIO to hold the council to account.
“The council must take urgent action to address its poor record on asbestos management and other organisational matters.
“The Mayor himself acknowledged the council has a serious issue to manage. The council must do so, with consequences if it does not,” Ms Upton said.
The PIO will ensure the council is under the close scrutiny of the Office of Local Government (OLG) as well as SafeWork NSW and the Environment Protection Authority.
On Friday, 22 December Ms Upton issued a notice of intention to issue a PIO and the council lodged a submission supporting this course of action.
The PIO sets out a range of actions, timeframes for their implementation and the evidence the council needs to produce to prove it has fully complied.
