Blue Mountains Arts Trail - November 2018

Artist Frank Boyle is one of thirteen artists opening their studio doors to the public this November during the Blue Mountains Arts Trail.

Frank first became interested in art at high school. "I could always draw well, but between high school and my mid-thirties I didn't draw at all," he says.

Frank left his native Scotland for Australia in his early twenties, earning a living as a sheet-metal worker. Then he decided to enrol in an arts course at TAFE. "I enjoyed it so much I went on to complete a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the National Art School," he says. "Taking up art again was one of the biggest and best decisions I've ever made - it's a big part of who I am."

Frank graduated in 2000 and won the Stuart Purves Australian Galleries Painting Prize in the same year. In 2001 he won the Sail Expo Working Artists Prize and has since held numerous solo and group exhibitions. When he's not painting, Frank is employed as a disability support worker. "It's a nice balance," he says.

The upcoming Arts Trail will be the first time Frank has opened his Hazelbrook studio to the public, and he says he's looking forward to the experience. "I enjoy interacting with people who are interested in what I do," he says. "No two people experience a piece of art in the same way. If people ask me about my work, I like to turn it around and ask them to draw their own conclusions. But I find it a real compliment when people connect emotionally to one of my paintings."

Frank says he is inspired not only by the Australian landscape and the Scottish landscape of his childhood, but also by the people and landscapes of India. "I travelled to Mumbai in India with my wife, who had a job posting there, in 2008. Living there for a year was a fabulous experience and it was my first opportunity to paint full-time. I responded to the sensory overload of the sights, smells and colours of the place and all the people. It is an amazing country and we return there often for holidays."

Arts Trails visitors can find Frank in his Hazelbrook studio between 10am and 4pm on Saturday 17 & Sunday 18 November 2018.
