Blue Mountains Arts Sector Fostered by Multi-Year Funding to Deliver Projects

By Office of Shayne Mallard Member of the Legislative Council
Posted: 14 Aug 2020
Minister for the Arts Don Harwin and Member of the Legislative Council and Blue Mountains resident Shayne Mallard MP announced that Varuna the National Writers House will receive $740,000 in long-term funding over the next 4 years to develop and deliver multiple arts and cultural activities.

Varuna the National Writers House are among 58 small to medium organisations sharing in $10 million a year over 4 years in funding under the refreshed guidelines of the 2020/2021 Independent Arts and Cultural Organisation (Multi-year Funding). Successful recipients were assessed by the NSW Government 10 Artform Boards – who comprise of the State’s key leaders in the arts sector.

Varuna the National Writers' House will deliver professional development and mentorship to writers nationwide. As Australia's only residency devoted exclusively to literature, Varuna's program will provide residencies to over 190 writers every year, present the annual Blue Mountains Writers’ Festival, and support a vibrant program of writing workshops and events.

Minister for the Arts Don Harwin said “I’m delighted this year’s funding has increased to support a greater number of organisations across NSW with almost half of the multi-year funding to be delivered to first-time recipients. The successful funded applicants embody the diversity of our communities and will bring underrepresented organisations to the forefront as they produce original and contemporary works.

“We are committed to supporting the NSW arts and culture sector and by ensuring extended financial stability for organisations, we will provide opportunity to enhance excellence in programming and strengthen our community through critical and creative education and enjoyment as recipients focus on the development and presentation of new ideas and practices.”

Shayne Mallard MP added his support to the announcement: “Varuna is one of the best kept secrets in the Blue Mountains cultural landscape. This funding will allow Varuna and its important work to be more broadly appreciated in the Blue Mountains community.” Mr Mallard added.

Funding over a 4 year period will cover a variety of arts and cultural activities from creation of new works, exhibitions, publishing and recording, promotion and marketing to conservation or development of collections and archives and equipment purchases. Successful recipients have nominated to commence their projects from July 2020 or December 2020 dependent on existing funding.

This year’s 2020/2021 Independent Arts and Cultural Organisation (Multi-year Funding) program will support 58 recipients across 33 metro Sydney, 14 regional NSW and 11 Western Sydney based organisations.
