Since Council’s official opening of the Blue Mountains Animal Care Centre (BMACC) in August 2024, we have found suitable homes for more than two hundred abandoned dogs and cats.

To celebrate, Council is inviting the community to an open day at BMACC’s Mort Street location in Katoomba, on Saturday 16 August.

There will be opportunities to tour the site, meet the adorable animals and the team who look after them. There will be also be a BBQ lunch and the chance to find out more about the work we do, including reuniting owners with lost dogs and cats.

Blue Mountains Mayor Mark Greenhill said: “Following the launch of BMACC a year ago at the site of the old RSPCA Animal Care Facility, dedicated staff have invested their time rehabilitating abandoned animals and matching them with appropriate new owners.

“There are numerous adoption success stories coming out of the Centre, with potential owners finding their perfect animal companions.”

Take Blue Mountains local Andy Vilder, who adopted a seven-year-old Rottweiler Kelpie cross called Mal. Andy spent time building a trusting relationship with Mal before finalising the adoption, first visiting the shelter regularly and then fostering Mal for two weeks at his property in Wentworth Falls.

“Having Mal here has changed my life,” Andy said. “She is sweet and energetic. I now have constant companionship, affection, laughter and fun. Mal settled in quickly and has proven to be an extremely smart, well-behaved and disciplined housemate.”

“Andy and Mal’s story is just one of the many success stories from BMACC since its launch,” Cr Greenhill said. “And I’d like to extend an invitation to anyone interested in finding out more and celebrating the one-year milestone of this important community service.”

Now fully operational, BMACC also operates a Lost and Found service for the local community. The BMACC Open Day is at:

Time: 10am-4pm, Saturday 16 August, BBQ lunch 12-2pm

Where: The former RSPCA site at 121 Mort Street, Katoomba

BMACC is open daily between 10am and 4pm (closed on Wednesdays, except for emergencies) by appointment only.

To arrange an appointment, call 4780 5791 or email catsanddogs@bmcc.nsw.gov.au. For more information go to council website here or the BMACC Facebook page here
