Preparatory works for much anticipated upgrades at Blaxland are now under way, with consultation taking place with key landholders as part of the Blaxland Masterplan process.

The Blaxland Masterplan was adopted by Council in February 2024, and Council has begun early consultation with landholders within the town centre, as well as state agencies such as Transport for NSW.

Collaboration with private landholders is essential to establish the approach to design and realise outcomes identified in the plan, and consultation will continue in coming months.

Planning analysis has also progressed to support a future amendment to the Blue Mountains LEP 2015, which will help deliver public benefits through a change to certain local controls. Any future amendment would be subject to public consultation, and feedback would be sought from the community.

Public domain works in Blaxland are also progressing as part of the Blaxland Town Centre Upgrade program, which will deliver a range of improvements identified in the Blaxland Masterplan including a revitalised Station Street pedestrian mall that will deliver a new central town square for the community.

The program, which is currently in the planning and scoping phase, is anticipated to be completed by 2027 and will include:

  • Renewed paving
  • Public amenity upgrades
  • Improved seating and lighting
  • New tree plantings and landscaping
  • Improved navigational signage
  • Public art

Blue Mountains Mayor Mark Greenhill said: “The Blaxland Masterplan highlights a range of opportunities to improve the town centre, and a renewed Station Street mall is a key action identified in the plan.

“The upgrades will deliver immediate benefits and contribute to the community’s vision for a town centre that is vibrant and that supports better social connection, with improved access and infrastructure for local events and cultural activities.”

Council will be holding a community stall in the town centre on Saturday 26 October to discuss the planned upgrades with the community, and to hear about people’s experience of the town centre.

Interested community members can also share their experience through an online survey which is open until 5pm, Friday 29 November. Responses to the survey will help to inform the delivery and future evaluation of the upgrade program.

Council was awarded funding via the NSW Government’s Western Sydney Infrastructure Grants program to deliver the improvements at Blaxland. This is in addition to funding for improvements at Katoomba, Glenbrook, and Hazelbrook.
