The comprehensive package of upgrades includes:

• Renewal of the Sutton Lane Car Park.
• Four new pedestrian crossings and ramps (located on the Wentworth Street and Govetts Leap Road intersection and Sutton Lane).
• Formalisation of on-street parking along Station Street.
• Footpath renewal and on-street parking upgrade on Gardiner Crescent at the frontage of the Blackheath Community Neighbourhood Centre.
• Renewal of the footpath along Wentworth Street.
• New public lighting.
• Improvements to the old ‘Post Office corner’ including sympathetic natural and built landscaping.
• Upgrades to the facilities and landscaping of the Great Western Highway road reserve, including a new sculptural artwork, “A Celebration of Blue Mountains Orchids” and improvements to the picnic and rest area, landscaping, and feature lighting from the Govetts Leap Statue to the Rotary Clock area.

The upgrade project was made possible by funding from the Australian Government; the Western Parkland City Liveability Program (which is part of the Western Sydney City Deal); and contributions from Council.

Blue Mountains Mayor Cr Mark Greenhill said: “Improving connectivity, access to local businesses and pedestrian safety has been a key outcome of the work. It’s about making it easier to get around safely and enjoying your experience while visiting Blackheath.

“When you couple practical improvements that result in better functioning streets and public spaces, with improved landscaping, streetscaping and public art you get the fantastic result that’s been delivered in Blackheath.

“I’d like to again thank the local community for their support and patience during the construction work. You have been instrumental in providing feedback throughout the upgrade process.”

Federal Member for Macquarie Susan Templeman said: “I’m delighted to see that the revitalised visitor infrastructure is officially open. These upgrades are an important part of the federally funded Blackheath Town Centre Rejuvenation project.

“These upgrades will improve connectivity and make the streets and public spaces safer and more accessible for pedestrians, particularly for older people and those with disability. This is another example of all three levels of government working together to deliver valuable infrastructure in our Blue Mountains community.”

State Member for Blue Mountains Trish Doyle said, “Blackheath residents and visitors alike will benefit from these excellent upgrades of public lighting, footpaths and landscaping.

“It’s been a pleasure to work with my colleagues across three tiers of government – and see the local community guide the projects!”

In addition to village centre upgrades, the Australian Government’s funding has also provided for improvements at Mt Blackheath, Hargreaves Lookout and Pulpit Rock.
