Blackheath Station Upgrade One Step Closer
Parliamentary Secretary for Infrastructure and the Aerotropolis and Blue Mountains resident Shayne Mallard MP said Blackheath was one of 37 regional and intercity stations, either completed or being upgraded, under the latest round of the NSW Government’s Transport Access Program (TAP), to deliver safe, modern and accessible public transport infrastructure across the state.
“We want to deliver a station that is accessible for all customers, including people with a disability, limited mobility, parents and carers with prams and customers with luggage,” Mr Mallard said.
“This upgrade includes three new lifts to station entries and platforms, accessible parking for an additional 10 car spaces in the Station Street commuter carpark, accessibility upgrades to the kiss-and-ride bay and taxi zone, along with removal of the pedestrian level crossing,” Mr Mallard said.
“We’ll also see new bicycle hoops be installed, improvements to CCTV, lighting, wayfinding, and hearing loops, and the resurfacing of the asphalt platform.
“The Blackheath station was built in 1869, so it’s crucial the upgrade also preserves the heritage façade.
“Once works get under way from mid-2022, this project will support 50 full-time jobs over the life of the project, which is due to cross the finish line in 2023.
“We’ve already seen almost $600 million committed to TAP upgrades in regional NSW since 2011, with more than 470 projects either completed or currently underway across NSW. Projects like these build on our vision to help make public transport a first-choice option for people living in the bush and build a safer, stronger regional NSW.”
Upgrades to stations in the Blue Mountains undertaken by the NSW Liberal government include Glenbrook, Faulconbridge, Hazelbrook, Wentworth Falls and Leura.
Next steps will involve design development, site investigations, including survey and condition inspections, and preparation of a Review of Environmental Factors for public display and further feedback, along with an invitation to comment on the design early next year.
