Artwork at Blue Mountains Cultural Centre reflects Growth and Resilience
The resulting installation, currently on display at the Cultural Centre in Katoomba, is the creation of more than two thousand children.
The children, from schools and child care centres in the Blue Mountains, decorated paper leaves to represent the burning and regeneration of local resilient plant species, the Blue Gum (Eucalyptus deanei) and the Grey Gum (Eucalyptus punctata).
Mayor Mark Greenhill said: “Our community was affected so profoundly by bush fire this time last year. A year on, Regenerate is a fitting way to remember what we’ve been through, and come out the other side of. This artwork is symbolic of our resilient community and the regrowth of our natural world.
“During these holidays, when many of us have to stay home, there are lots of free local activities for families and I encourage parents and young children to visit the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre to see this beautiful artwork created by local young people.
“I’d also like to thank all the many schools and early childhood centres who participated.”
The Regenerate project was initially developed by Orange Regional Museum and Orange Regional Gallery. It has been adapted by Blue Mountains Cultural Centre and Blue Mountains City Council's Healthy Waterways Team.
Regenerate: Blue Mountains is currently exhibiting in the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre foyer until 31 January 2021.
