2023 marks the 100^th anniversary of the formation of Legacy which began in the trenches of the Western Front during World War 1, when a soldier said to his dying mate “I’ll look after the missus and kids”. This became known as The Promise. Since 1923, Legacy has kept the promise though advocacy, education, financial and educational support. In conjunction with the Lithgow Branch of Legacy, Lithgow Library will be displaying some Legacy memorabilia during April.

This year we also recognise the 50^th anniversary of the end of Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War. In 1973, the Governor-General proclaimed Australia’s role over, but fighting between North and South Vietnam continued until April 1975. Over 60,000 Australians served in Vietnam, over 3,000 were wounded and 523 lost their lives. Lithgow Library is honouring those who served in Vietnam with a special small display as part of their regular ANZAC window display, and a gallery of the Vietnam War Victoria Cross recipients.

There will also be some interesting local historical photos on exhibition to complement the various displays.

All photos and memorabilia will be on display at Lithgow Library from Tuesday 11 April to Monday 1 May 2023, so call in and have a look around. Library hours are Monday – Friday 9.00am-6.00pm and Saturday 9.00am- noon.
