A Thousand Petals - Photographic Exhibition by Leonarda Kovačić

L Kovačić, The Flower Queen
A Thousand Petals is the 13th solo exhibition by Dr Leonarda Kovačić, Katoomba-based photographic artist, historian, tutor, lecturer and curator. The exhibition is inspired by Buddhist cosmology which describes the Buddha's pure realm as a celestial abode full of light, lotus flowers and other beautiful things, in which each lotus flower petal multiplies into thousands of new thousand-petaled flowers.

The earthly embodiment of these thousand-petaled lotus flowers is the exhibition's feature image of the Giant Waterlily (Lat. Victoria cruziana, Santa Cruz waterlily) from South America which produces a giant multi-petaled white flower for only one night. Following pollination by night insects, the flower gradually turns pink until its life cycle is over by the end of the next day.

Metaphorically, all flowers of this world are one thousand-petaled lotuses. They are all magnificently generous with their scented grace and interrelated with us, our environment and each other on multiple levels. This exhibition is dedicated to all the flowers of this world whose grace and beauty we often take for granted.

In her work, Leonarda explores the impermanence, transformation, change and interrelatedness of phenomena. Each of her exhibitions represents one aspect of her experience of the world we inhabit and its numerous creatures and creations which include animals, trees, flowers, rocks, clouds, lights, colours, and commonly unseen beings such as spirits. Leonarda hopes that - after seeing her images - the viewers will never again look at these phenomena in the same way.

Born in Croatia's culture capital Zagreb and raised by mother academic artist, Leonarda came to Australia in 1997 and completed a PhD in Aboriginal Studies at the University of Melbourne in 2001. In Croatia, she had studied journalism and photography, but it was not before her fieldwork in the Aboriginal communities of northern New South Wales that she produced a serious body of photographic work. For 12 years, she collaborated with the Elders of Gamaroi and Yularoi nations, recording their cultural heritage. She became enchanted with the Australian bush, and continues to roam the wild paths around Sydney, observing constant changes in nature and herself.

During her 25-year-long academic career, Leonarda has taught and published on colonial images of Aboriginal people in Australia and overseas. She is one of the few historians in Australia specialising in colonial photography of Aboriginal people.

Leonarda specialises in landscapes, nature scenes, flora and fauna, abstracts, and architecture. Her images have accentuated poeticism and meditative simplicity and clarity.
