5 x 5 – the Artist and the Patron at Penrith Regional Gallery
While today’s patrons may not model themselves on the Medicis, their role extends beyond commissioning work for private collections, to include intimate involvement and support for artist’s practice.
Penrith Regional Gallery & The Lewers Bequest’s Autumn Exhibition Suite 5 x 5 – the Artist and the Patron recognises the significance of modern day patronage by exploring five artist/collector pairings. Artists include: - Uji (Hahan) Handoko Eko Saputro, Julian Meagher, Nigel Milsom, Tracey Emin and Patrick Hartigan. Presenting art rarely seen outside a domestic setting, the exhibition 5 x 5 – the Artist and the Patron brings private collections into the public arena.
Independent curator Micheal Do, supported by a grant from the Copyright Agency and Museums & Galleries NSW, invited five Sydney based collectors to select an individual artist and artworks from their personal collections for exhibition. Through documented interviews with each collector, the curator has unveiled a private world of art making, art collection and philanthropic motives deeply rooted in the lives of these artists and collectors.
5 x 5 is on exhibition from 24 March through to 20 May. Take some time to visit Penrith Regional Gallery for this intriguing exhibition, and “remember owning art is only a small part of the relationship...the best thing about art is most of the relationship you can have with it is free, just by looking.” - Amanda Love – art consultant and collector.
Also on exhibition from 7 April as part of the Autumn Exhibition Suite:
Enter a sensory world. Reach out and gently, carefully, delicately, make contact: this is a world of sense and sensory satisfaction. For Tactile, the gallery rules have been suspended. The audience is invited to interact. The result is tactile sensation.
