Theatre, performance, music and comedy - shows that'll captivate you, make you think, smile and laugh out loud in The Joan’s fun, classic and adventurous line-up of 2019.

In 2019 the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre is presenting a plethora of works across the spectrum of performance, offering great discounts for show subscribers and whisking audiences away on a captivating journey through the performing arts: from symphonies to circus, puppetry to stand-up and stories.

The Joan’s 2019 Season explores the finest in music, both contemporary and classical, and features some of the greatest new theatre works in Australia. It will feature a cracking bunch of talented artists, including Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Kenny Broberg, Naomi Price, Lisa Crouch and an entirely new solo show by Jonathan Biggins.

Start the year by taking a trip into the deep south with Sun Rising: The Songs That Made Memphis on 18 & 19 January. Designed to inform and educate the audience while rocking them senseless, Sun Rising revisits Memphis’ famed Sun Records, focusing on the early period of 1950-57 with music from artists BB King, Howlin' Wolf, Ike Turner, Elvis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis and more.

On 23 February, The Orava Quartet with Greta Bradman features one of the most exciting string quartets of its generation. Known for their passionate and engaging performances, they have been hailed by The Australian as, “the future of Australian Chamber Music, the real deal.” One of Australasia’s most celebrated operatic and concert artists, Greta Bradman, will join them for what will be a powerhouse evening.

On 8 & 9 March, One of Australia’s favourite performers, Jonathan Biggins, is Paul Keating - visionary, reformer and rabble-rouser. With an abundance of intelligence and wit, The Gospel According to Paul is a new and anticipated comedy about a critical time in Australian history and the man who shaped it.

Join adored entertainer and Australian national treasure Christine Anu on 16 March for a night of conversation and song. Not only will Christine sing up a storm, but on this special occasion she'll also speak about her life and career, her advocacy work and the importance of Indigenous languages in cultural identity.

Joyous. Sexy. Heartbreaking. On 6 April take a dizzying ride through love’s collision course in I Want To Know What Love Is. Based on 800 anonymous love stories submitted by you, your friends and your exes, this dedicated theatre show throws a spotlight on long-buried memories, bedroom fantasies, crushes and conquests as secret confessions are transformed for the stage.

Paying tribute to one of music’s most famed artists, Lisa Crouch stars in Constant Craving: The Music of k.d. lang. On 13 April Lisa Crouch will recreate the highs and lows from the music of k.d. lang’s album Ingénue in this stunning new show. Ingénue topped the music charts worldwide and won numerous awards; expect favourites such as 'Constant Craving', 'The Air That I Breathe', 'Hallelujah' and 'Crying'.

Enjoy an intimate evening with Mozart and Schubert on 31 May in this special performance by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and Emma Matthews. Recognised as a Mozart interpreter, virtuosic and insightful, Emma Matthews has chosen hidden gems and well-known masterpieces that demonstrate Mozart’s dazzling ability to meld melody and voice.

Heating things up for winter, on 1 June fire and circus become an instrument of the orchestra in Concertos on Fire. Musicians perform daring acrobatic stunts, taming and manipulating fire while music literally springs to life from all corners of the Concert Hall. Integrating modern circus, contemporary art and music and physical theatre, this concert is a compelling narrative conveyed through movement and physicality.

On 13 June, experience the ultimate expression of Shakespeare's theatrical trickery in A Midsummer Night's Dream, brought to us by Sport for Jove. In the heat of the shortest night of the year, young lovers and work-a-day dreamers plunge into a world between sleep and waking, warning us that family, love and friendship are fragile – and that’s just the mortal world.

Get ready to blast off for an epic adventure on 14 & 15 June with Bruce. In this new low-fi puppetry spectacular, Bruce will sweep you away on an epic adventure of love and revenge. He may be just a floating block of yellow foam, but Bruce is out to prove he’s got a heart of pure gold.

Once again the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow is prepping for their tour, heading to The Joan on 18 June.  Home-delivering hot and tasty comic treats to audiences near and far from Australia and beyond, the Roadshow has it all. It’s stand-up, sketch, satire, silliness and song – all in one side-splitting show!

For one night only on 20 July, Australia’s internationally acclaimed drumming ensemble Taikoz will leave you breathless with infectious rhythms, soaring melodies, lavish costumes and intricate dance. Is it drumming? Is it dance? The concert is a stunning collaboration that highlights the artists’ inner intensity, beauty of expression and synchronicity of sound and movement.

A story inspired by war-torn Europe on 2 & 3 August will have audiences gripping their seats in Diplomacy. In 1944 at the Hôtel Meurice, the Swedish diplomat Raoul Nordling and the German General, Dietrich von Choltitz meet in a life and death situation for the city of Paris after Hitler has ordered its destruction. Featuring theatre legends John Gaden and John Bell, Diplomacy comes to The Joan on the back of a sell-out Ensemble Theatre season.

With a plethora of accolades and acclaimed appearances with some of the world’s most renowned orchestras, pianist Kenny Broberg performs at The Joan on 7 September, bringing poise and technical brilliance to the art of pianoforte. With sound marked by “an imaginative shaping of themes, revelation of inner voices, and an unfailing sense of momentum,” it’s a concert not to be missed.

On 11 & 12 September, experience modern storytelling at its best with Spencer; a brand new comedy-drama looking at a gloriously dysfunctional Australian family. About to meet the young son he never knew he had, Scott and the family have returned home to help mark the occasion. With the surprise appearance of the father they barely remember, the entire family is forced to work together to clean up both the house and their own fractured relationships as the clock ticks down to Spencer’s arrival.

John Bell AO OBE, founder of Bell Shakespeare Company, partners with internationally acclaimed, ARIA-nominated pianist Simon Tedeschi to bring you Echoes of the Jazz Age on 21 September. For one-night only, experience the Roaring Twenties through words and music with a tantalising trip back in time – plus a surprise female guest.

On 18 & 19 October comes the must-see live music event of the year: Lady Beatle – a kaleidoscopic journey through the Beatles’ most monumental hits. Australian stage and screen star Naomi Price and a live band transport audiences to 1960s Liverpool for a rollicking magical mystery tour about four boys who changed the world of music.

The all-singing, all-dancing, side-splittingly funny solution to all the world’s problems returns for another year of satirical genius with The Wharf Revue, showing from 31 October – 2 November.  Stalwart performer Drew Forsythe returns with special triple-threat guests including the hilarious Simon Burke.  The choreography is tight, the wigs are loose, the punchlines are loaded.  Everything is ready for a big night of laughter and mayhem.

Subscriptions are again available in 2019 in three sizes with respective discounts on pricing for shows for those who subscribe; a four pack saves you 10%, six pack 12% and an eight pack 15%.  Bigger packs are available by contacting The Joan’s Box Office. Subscriptions are on sale now online or by phoning 4723 7600.
