The drive from the heart of Sydney to Katoomba takes about 90 minutes via the M4 Motorway. Beyond Penrith the Great Western Highway climbs into the mountains to take you past a number of delightful towns and villages including Springwood, Woodford, Wentworth Falls and Leura, each worth a stop.
An alternative driving route from Sydney travels through Windsor and along Bells Line of Road. Highlights include the orchards around Bilpin, Blue Mountains Botanic Garden and a spur road to the gorgeous village of Mount Wilson before rejoining the Great Western Highway at Mount Victoria. Allow 2¼ hours from Sydney to Mount Victoria.
Sydney Trains depart the city’s Central Station at frequent intervals throughout the day. The fastest trains take two hours to reach Katoomba, with stops at Strathfield, Parramatta, Penrith and the towns and villages between Penrith and Katoomba.
The Greater Blue Mountains Drive is simply awesome, a series of linked drives that encircle the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area. The drive includes 18 Discovery Trails that string together a vast array of experiences - mountain views, wineries, country markets, botanical wonders and bush-lined creeks that still yield specks of gold.
For train travellers, the Blue Mountains Explorer Bus is the ideal way to take in the sights.
