New Website to Encourage Beginning Artists

A new website and blog for tyro artists working in watercolour and other media, showcasing the Blue Mountains and Penrith regions.

A new website has been launched to encourage beginner artists in the Blue Mountains and Penrith regions to publish their efforts.

‘The Backyard Watercolorist’ is the work of Rob Weaver, former Communications and Marketing Manager of Scenic World and one time director of Blue Mountains, Lithgow and Oberon Tourism.

“A couple of years ago I took up watercolour painting under the tutelage of well-known Australian watercolour painter Joe Cartwright,” Rob says.

“Since I gave up full-time work last year, I’ve had more time to practice and hopefully have graduated from tyro to acceptable beginner.  Along the way I’ve seen literally hundreds of websites and blogs by accomplished artists, filled with wonderful examples of their work and useful tips for tyros.  But I haven’t found one by a beginner for beginners – and that’s what ‘The Backyard Watercolorist’ is about.

“I wanted a place where others could see and discuss my work and, if they feel so inclined, can publish works of their own.  Hopefully, it will become a place where we can critique and encourage each other, and maybe have input from well-known local artists as well.”

“The site is still in its early stages – it will evolve as interest grows.  I also plan to upload photos that I have taken that others can use if they like as the starting point of a painting or drawing.”
