This autumn Mayfield Garden will unveil its latest creation, a stone and steel wisteria arbour located in the water garden.

Designed by garden designer, Peter D’Arcy, and crafted onsite from hexagonal mild steel and locally quarried basalt, the stone plinths and high arches of the arbour reflect the shape and reach of a tree.

Planted at the base of each plinth is Wisteria brachybotrys Okayama, chosen for its deep purple colour and scent.

Blue Mountains, Lithgow & Oberon Tourism chairman Randall Walker said: ``This new wisteria arbour is yet another reason to experience the beautiful Mayfield Garden, which looks absolutely stunning in autumn colour, and Mayfield Garden is yet another reason to visit the wonderful Blue Mountains, Lithgow and Oberon region in general.

``The school holidays is an ideal time for visitors to fully explore the truly unique sights and experiences this destination has to offer.’’

Mayfield Garden spokeswoman Karyn Taylor said: ``The arbour looks elegant and delicate, which is quite a feat given the weight of the steel and stones.’’

The wisteria arbour joins an impressive list of follies and features found within this grand Australian interpretation of an English style garden.

``With the garden now reaching close to 64 ha (160 acres), it is possible to have many follies and features fitting easily into the landscape.

``We’re excited to have this uniquely designed arbour finished in time for our upcoming autumn open weekends.’’

Mayfield Garden, Mayfield Rd, near Oberon, is open from 9am to 4.30pm during the April 14-15, 21-22 and 28-29 weekends. Entry is cash only: $25 adults, $10 children 7-16 years (children 0-6 free).
